At Jrahovit – near Andraniks bust
A few days ago, we marked the 161st anniversary of the birth of General Andranik Ozanyan and recalled his immortal example. And today, gathered here in the Ararat region, before his bust, we have assembled not only to pay tribute and keep his eternal memory alive, but also to recognize that we bear a duty—especially in these days—to continue his sacred work.
Andranik was not only a freedom fighter and a commander of freedom fighters, but also a symbol of the Armenian liberation struggle. Therefore, in remembering him, we inevitably remember all our freedom fighters who fought decisively for the liberation of our Fatherland. We also recall our national liberation movement, which in the modern era awakened within our nation the dream of building a Greater Armenia.
Andranik began his struggle during the harshest years of Armenian history—when our people endured massacres and genocide. When many believed the situation was hopeless, that the Armenian nation was doomed to destruction, Andranik and men like him turned to arms, because they did not know what it meant to be hopeless. They understood that there are no hopeless situations—only hopeless people. Where the weak, the cowardly, and the servile saw ruin, brave and strong Armenians saw the beginning of a new and glorious struggle.
Surrender never crossed their minds, because for them it was never an option. To surrender meant betraying the Fatherland, betraying historical justice, and failing the Armenian nation’s mission of liberation. Looking at Andranik’s bust, we cannot help but feel responsibility toward all those freedom fighters who shed sweat and blood for our Fatherland. By liberating our native lands, our heroic ancestors ensured the existence of future generations. Every square meter of land that was freed through blood and sacrifice was liberated by Armenian sons who carried Andranik’s freedom loving spirit.
Andranik was a man who never doubted the potential of our nation, fully aware that when Armenians are united and armed, they become invincible. In those chaotic times, he remained unbreakable because he held a simple ideology: land and water are preserved only by the spear and the sword. As his comrade Nikol Duman once said, “A nation that does not wish to perish must be capable of bearing arms.” Andranik knew that the more Armenians took up arms, the closer we came to victory, because weapons and struggle were the only guarantees of our security. Our General understood that only by turning the “paper ladle” into an iron one could the Armenian nation fight for its rights and independence—because the “toothless” nation is pitied uselessly, but the one with “teeth” is always taken into account.
Today, when our external enemies and traitors seek to deceitfully disarm us and bring us entirely to our knees, we are obliged to remember the struggle of our heroes. We live in fateful times, when more than ever we must keep their example in our minds and their memory in our hearts. Every step we take, every action we undertake must be carried out in their victorious spirit—without doubt and without hesitation.
More than five years have passed since the treacherous 44-day war and our humiliating defeat, and our enemies, cooperating with traitors, seek to fully reap the fruits of their false victory. They want to see Armenians bent and submissive, and Armenia completely divided and diminished—without an army, without sovereignty, without independence. And how long will this humiliation continue? A national leader must come to power in Armenia—one who will strike his fist upon the table and declare: enough—we will no longer tolerate this degradation.
We do not accept their false peace agenda, which is simply an agenda aimed at erasing the fighting spirit of the Armenian nation. We have no doubt that this anti-Armenian program will fail, and that their traitorous rule will collapse—because what is built on falsehood cannot succeed in the long term. The enemy continues to arm itself and constantly threaten our country, speaking of the so-called “Western Azerbaijan” project, while neo-Bolshevik traitors continue deceiving and misleading our compatriots by speaking of reconciliation.
They want to convince us that we can solve this issue with papers and signatures. But as humble students of Andranik, we know that weapons can only be defeated by weapons, threats can only be destroyed by demonstrating strength, and dangers can only be neutralized through armed struggle. Only by becoming a force factor can we solve our problems and overcome the challenges before us.
Our enemies seek to seize our country and establish dominance over the Armenian world—doing to the Republic of Armenia what they did to Artsakh. Yet our movement declares before the world today that Armenia is not “Western Azerbaijan”; rather, Azerbaijan is Eastern Armenia. A new era is approaching in which these words will become reality. In this merciless struggle, either they will walk over our corpses—or, by the will of the Creator, we will walk over theirs.
When the great crisis arrives and this entire illusion collapses, fate will compel us to do what must be done—to crush the enemy, saving our Fatherland from total fragmentation and our independent statehood from final collapse. The Armenian nation will rise again and carry forward the banner of our eternity.
Andranik taught us: “Every night, before laying your head on the pillow and going to sleep, remember what you have done that day for your nation.” Following his command, today we swear that every hour of every day we will think only of our Fatherland’s development, the prosperity of our natio, and the strengthening of our state. The time has come to write a new history—with Andranik’s spirit and the strength of our arms—where only the trumpet of our victory resounds.
Long live the glorious memory of our legendary commander and freedom fighters!
Long live Armenia!
