In Armenia’s political arena, everyone strives to be a leader and believes they can be one, without realizing that leadership comes with immense responsibility and sacrifice. That is why, in these relatively stable and peaceful times, there is no big consolidation around a single leader—especially if that leader is still young. Many men, driven by their ego, fail to understand that there is nothing bad or demeaning about being a follower; moreover, to become a good leader, one must first be a good follower.
Before entering politics, as an unknown repat I served as a contract soldier on the frontlines in Tavush. Two years later, I volunteered for the 2020 war and served from beginning to end on the Martakert front line. Throughout my entire service—both in peacetime and during war—I carried out all orders from my commanders without hesitation, regardless of the fact that platoon or company commanders were sometimes younger than me. I was born, raised, and received my higher education in the United States, but that never became a reason for me to place myself above my commanders. There was no duty I refused to perform, regardless of how unwell or sick I felt. I had no complexes, because in the army I did not see myself as an individual separate from others, but as a small part of the force; and if that force is to move correctly, then every soldier must know their duties and carry them out with honor—regardless of circumstances.
Everyone wants to be a leader, but not everyone wants—or is prepared—to walk the heavy and difficult path of leadership. Everyone wants to sit on the throne, but no one wants to earn that throne through sacrifice and relentless, disciplined hard work. Yet only through that path can the throne be made to serve the nation, the Fatherland, and statehood. Therefore, leadership is not self-proclaimed. To be a leader, a person must first prove—through the example of their own life and their unwavering struggle—that their words and ideas are not empty, but are grounded in concrete steps and actions.
