I have actually been a person distant from the arts, since mathematics and the sciences came more naturally to me, and I ultimately hold a master’s degree in physics. However, from my teenage years—and especially during my studies at the University of California—I felt a certain affection for oratory. I was always fascinated by the most powerful orators in history, who were at the same time the greatest revolutionaries and leaders history has known.
I had this affinity for the art because, perhaps subconsciously, I sensed that in the future, by a call of destiny, I would begin to delve deeply into it and use it as a means to convey and preach the truth to my compatriots. When I would occasionally sing patriotic songs (I had memorized a few), people told me I had a commanding voice, and it was then that I began to think that perhaps I possessed a “hidden talent” I had not yet discovered.
In any case, after moving to Armenia, I quickly realized that I was obliged to improve my Armenian if I wished to live and move forward in Armenia—especially if I intended to enter politics. After returning from the war, I also began to understand that the time for me to become an orator was gradually approaching. My affinity for this art, the refinement of my Armenian, and historical events finally converged, and I was ready to use the most important weapon of any “marginal” revolutionary political figure.
I began to delve gradually into oratory, and the deeper I go, the more convinced I become that it is not merely an art, but the king of the arts. No other art has had as great an impact on history as oratory. Every great idea, movement, or revolution has ultimately needed a voice in order to be brought to life.
Painting moves the eye, music moves the heart, literature moves the mind—but oratory moves the human spirit. It unites mind and emotion, turning words into action and individuals into force. No other art can, in a single instant, change the course of history and the fate of a nation the way oratory can. That is why oratory surpasses all other arts.
Therefore, every person who considers himself a revolutionary—and even more so, a national activist—is obliged to take oratory seriously, if the goal is to unite the nation around one noble idea, purpose, and mission.
