When remembering Nzhdeh, also remember that in his time he was rejected by a significant part of our compatriots, being labeled as an “extremist,” “unrealistic,” and his speeches as overly “theatrical,” “emotional,” “romantic,” and “harsh,” supposedly lacking in “reasonableness.” He was mainly opposed by the elderly, yet his uncompromising approach managed to inspire and unite the youth. It was for this reason that he wrote the book “The Struggle of Sons Against Fathers.”
The majority of our compatriots who quote Nzhdeh’s words today would have opposed him if they had lived in his time. The grandfathers of today’s so-called “devotees” speaking in Nzhdeh’s name were, in all likelihood, Bolsheviks or collaborators with the Bolsheviks who betrayed him. If there truly were this many genuine Nzhdehists in Armenia, we would certainly not be in our current situation.
This is a bitter but undeniable truth, and there are many such examples in the history of mankind. Prophets are rarely accepted by the majority at first, because they are far ahead of their time, operating on a completely different frequency. But over time they become accepted—not because they have changed and adapted to reality, but because events have changed and reality has caught up to them.
Nzhdeh’s prophetic spirit, which we bring to life in this new era, continues to remain a vital part of the spiritual foundation of our movement.
