All the modern-era documents related to the Armenian nation—from San Stefano to Lausanne—have shown us that we cannot tie our hopes to either the East or the West if we want to advance our interests. They have shown that behind all those negotiations and papers the real language being spoken is the language of force — the “iron ladle.” They have shown that if you do not represent any power of your own and are not prepared to wage a determined struggle for your interests — first and foremost relying on your own forces — everyone will despise you and treat you as nothing, even the most pro-Armenian powers. They have shown that the more slavish we are and the more we behave like weaklings and beggars, the more others will humiliate us and try to use us for their own interests, which will inevitably be contrary to the interests of our nation. They will simply step over us and bargain with the stronger party, as they do today.
The more we believe in our potential and place our hopes on our own strength, the more properly and pro-Armenian we will be able to conduct policy — becoming less dependent on foreign powers. Only then will we be able to gain real allies who will find common interests with the struggle we lead, because toothless peoples are pitied in vain, while those with teeth are taken into account.
In numbers and resources, all the major political forces in Armenia today — whether pro-Western or pro-Russian — compete over who will be a better patron for us, who will come to secure our safety in our stead, and who will fight our battles for us. They call themselves “national,” but they do not know what it means to be nationalist, even if it were served to them on a silver platter, because deep in their souls they are slavish, pitiful, beggarly, and treacherous. They give false promises to our compatriots and nurture false hopes among them — saying what the majority of the people want to hear, but not what they MUST hear.
A true nationalist political movement is one that speaks the truth, no matter how bitter it may be.
A true nationalist is one who never abandons the struggle and recognizes the necessity of showing and applying force against the enemy. Having learned the lessons of history well, we have clearly understood that our real hope and salvation lie only within ourselves.
