In the fifteenth century, Vlad III...

In the fifteenth century, Vlad III, King of Wallachia and a national hero of Romania, is considered a controversial figure in history. I am not a historian, so I have not delved deeply into all of his deeds, but I know the important part: Vlad the "Impaler" did not beg or plead for peace from the Turks, as today’s Armenia's neo-Bolsheviks do today, but instead imposed his will. Rather than greeting the Turks with smiles and “hearts,” he welcomed them with stakes…

He ruled the southern region of Romania called Wallachia, and when Ottoman Turks approached his borders, they saw that stakes had been driven through the bodies of his compatriots, with placards hanging from them that read: “Welcome to Wallachia.” Crossing the border and seeing this scene, the Turks would think that this time they were invading the wrong country…

By taking such measures, Vlad gained a reputation as a very cruel and ruthless man, and even hearing his name would terrify the Turks. This psychological terror helped the Romanians drive away and keep at a distance the Turks, who were far superior to them in resources.

No matter what historians say about Vlad, we Armenians have much to learn from him…
