“An end to the reign of falsehood in our lives—a falsehood...

“An end to the reign of falsehood in our lives—a falsehood that has repeatedly undermined the foundations of our national sovereignty and destroyed it. Because of this reigning falsehood, truth has been driven out of our reality. There is no truth—there is no truth in our lives—and that is why our lives are so dim and hopeless, why our morals are so ugly, why our souls are so barren. There is no truth, and thus inner solidarity remains nothing but an empty phrase; that is why the poverty of thought, development, and spirit is so glaring in our national life. There is no truth, and therefore a part of our people wanders like Maeterlinck’s blind, lost in the ‘forest of ignorance.’

There is philosophizing selfishness, hatred, envy, pettiness, and political chatter. There is everything that truly turns hell into hell. All of this exists because there is no truth. There is falsehood, and, to the delight of the Turks, internal strife continues. There is falsehood, and Armenians will continue to be unproductive—some building, others destroying. Many breathe and live in falsehood, and thus Armenians as a whole remain spiritually weak—that is, incapable and unworthy of having an independent homeland.

The reign of truth in our lives must make real and unshakable the victory of our people over their external enemies. Truth—ah, young Armenians—is that divine light and warmth by which the soul of both the individual and the nation is nourished and strengthened. Falsehood enslaves; truth saves. The latter is strength, the former weakness. Cowards and the base—these are the disciples of falsehood. Truth will raise the brave and the noble. Defeat, slavery, suffering—such is the fate of peoples who pay tribute to falsehood. Truth, on the contrary, strengthens and saves, making nations victorious. The former is a sad symptom of the corruption of souls. The latter, let us repeat with the wise, is the greatest divinity that nature has revealed to humanity and endowed with the greatest power. The foundation of an individual and a collective that live in truth is laid upon rock; that of one floundering in falsehood—upon sand.”
