A groundbreaking new study suggests origins of Indo-European language family in the Armenian Highlands. A groundbreaking study led by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology reveals a hybrid hypothesis for the origin of Indo-European languages, spoken by nearly half the world's population.
The research suggests a hybrid origin with an initial homeland in the Armenian Highlands south of the Caucasus, and later, a branch expanding northwards into the Steppe.
The Indo-European language family began diverging around 8100 years ago, originating south of the Caucasus in the Armenian Highlands. Subsequent migrations occurred around 7000 years ago, reaching the Pontic-Caspian and Forest Steppe, with further expansions into Europe around 5000 years ago.
